If you want an even more solid approach than a gesture drawing, try placing the figure in space using enveloping. Check the big angles to see the relationship of points to each other. For example, I bet if you were to align your pencil with the bottom half of the stage and check the angle against your drawing, you would find a pretty big discrepancy. I attend an atelier, and you always have to have a very strong envelope before you start on your gesture (which usually just consists of orienting the main movable masses and finding the Hogarth Line). If you can perfect your envelope you will save yourself a lot of frustration further down the line.
